It’s all pretty damn full on at the moment. Work is finished for the year, but I’ve got two kids to look after and a whole bunch of writing stuff happening. Read on….
MY NEWEST PROJECT:
The Seed is a Post Apocalyptic ‘Choose your own Adventure’ computer game that is being produced by MDT, the award winning team that brought you the S.T.A.L.K.E.R Misery Mod.
In the year 2026, as one of the few survivors left on Earth, you must explore this decaying world, make the choices which dictate which story plays out and try to work out what has happened to the Earth.
It’s a graphically absorbing masterpiece with a storyline to match. The game is like a graphic novel, the story like your character’s diary, and every decision you make branches the story, takes you down one road, and stops you going down the other. Its an interactive world where the choices you make have consequences to how the game plays out and how much you learn about what ‘The Event’ really was.
The Seed launched a Kickstarter campaign at the beginning of this year and were successfully funded in April with enough extra cash to hit some stretch goals. As soon as I saw the kickstarter and saw the milieu, the intensely immersive screen shots, I knew this was a story I wanted to write. As I had done for Elite:Dangerous I emailed through and put my hand up to help with story works if it would be useful. I received a ‘Thanks but we are ok at the moment’ type email and I thought nothing more of it. Then a few weeks ago they put the call out for authors. As part of my application I sent in a section of a 1st person present tense post apocalyptic story I had written called ‘The Lucifer Effect’ (the title referring to a book which describes how the most honourable people can end up creating the world’s biggest evils).
Needless to say the team running The Seed liked what they saw. They brought me into the team to look at the background story information and I’ll be starting my first in-game chapter before the year is out.
This is another exciting project that I’m really excited to be involved with. If you like strong story, post apocalyptic adventures and the choose your own adventure format, then the Seed is for you. If you are interested, please check out the links below:
SHALLOW SPACE MARCHES ON
We are still looking toward a Kickstarter in the new year. There is still a lot of preparation to do, but also waiting for people to get back to their normal lives and recover from holiday…ahem..excesses (i.e so they can afford to help us out 🙂 ). Meanwhile, I have been crafting a ‘Faction Guide’ for the worlds of Shallow Space. It’s the kind of document that I could keep on expanding forever – There is so much depth to the world’s of Shallow Space and nearly limitless things I could write about it.
The main factions are:
1)The Terran Empire aka the Imperium
2)The Terran Confederation Navy
5)Mineral and Fusion Corp
6)Alliance of Interstellar Mercenaries
7)Aligned Pirate Forces
These are the forces that you will interact with while you play the game. Their backgrounds, history, current policies, ways of life etc are all recorded. This information is crucial for verisimilitude for both programming the game and writing tie-in fiction. For example, knowing the way INC appreciate excess and fashion will have a bearing on their ship designs and decals.
With the new website I’m working on some new free short fiction. Like ‘The Gift’ this will help fill in background details of the worlds of Shallow Space, so people and places are already familiar to you before you play the game. While ‘The Gift’ focused on a mercenary, this next story will focus on pirates.
Along side this another of my fiction pieces for Shallow Space is currently being converted into a graphic novel. I’ve already seen some of the work and it looks fantastic.
So Shallow Space is keeping me pretty busy alongside The Seed. Today I also received my own copies of my Elite:Dangerous novel ‘And Here The Wheel‘ Shortly I’ll be organising for these to be sent out for reviews, reading, logging at libraries, etc to maximise bang-for-buck over here in NZ.
So with Faction Guides, Graphic Novels, Post Apocalyptic fiction and ‘Author Editions’ of And Here The Wheel, next year promises to be very, very busy.
I can’t wait!
I hope you enjoy some time out with family and friends, have a merry christmas and a fantastic new years.
